Under the contemporary educational philosophy that places “student-centeredness” as a core principle in universities, the student center has emerged as a significant new building type on campuses in recent years. This particular project sits at the edge of the campus. Originally not part of the university’s initial master plan, it had to be accommodated on a site chosen as opportunities allowed—long and narrow, running north to south. To the west, it already brushes against the campus boundary, backing onto a busy urban expressway; to the east, it neighbors a scenic lake with lush, water-close greenery. Unlike the ample, orderly land reserved for academic and research functions, this site carries an inherent quality of being at the “edge.” How to respond to the character of this marginal zone and unlock its hidden potential became the key to the design.

The new Student Center for the University of Limerick, which is located in a significant site at the gateway to the campus, was generated by a vision for a place that is at the very heart of university life, transforming the social experience of the growing student population by providing social spaces, places for encounter and exchange of information, a center to support both students and alumni-a home from home, a place on campus that students can call their own. The project was first envisaged in 2015, when a student referendum was held following extensive consultation, to agree a levy that would effectively fund the development of the building.

The concept for the Med Uni Campus Graz is based on the integration of work, teaching, and leisure spaces on a shared inner-city site. The project implements a clearly structured ensemble of coherent yet differentiated buildings, taking various requirements into account as far as possible. Openness, accessibility, and communication play important roles here. The campus is characterized by the clear placement of the volumes, which creates an exciting interplay between buildings and open spaces, between public and non-public uses, and thus a high potential for identification in the urban context.

Situated within a 32-acre university campus, the main administration offices, along with an auditorium, seminar halls, library, and cafeteria, form the functions of this building. As opposed to creating an imposing edifice, the building gradually steps up from the approach direction, belying its 28 metre height, becoming a multifunctional stage.

The ECoRE Building is a 280,000 SF engineering research and teaching engine at the heart of a new engineering precinct, across the Atherton Street divide, and located at the west terminus of the main campus axis. Funneling activity and flow, the building’s formal gesture invites pedestrian connections and pedagogical collaborations between the main campus and the new precinct.

UNI-CENTER project renovates Hanyang University’s existing Student Union, located along the main pedestrian axis connecting the subway station, the main building, and the welfare center, into a welfare-centered, multi-functional community hub for students. The design goes beyond simple functional enhancement—it restores the building’s sense of place and redefines it as a central node within the campus circulation network.

Site and Context – Located on the southeastern edge of the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Economics and Business, Al‑Iqtishad redefines the role of a campus Mushola, shifting from a discreet endpoint to a civic and spiritual threshold within the FEB UI Masterplan. The site descends naturally toward Mahoni Lake, a landscape of deep ecological and symbolic importance. The design minimizes impact on existing contours and vegetation, allowing the building to merge with the terrain. Anchored from the academic axis yet open toward the lake.
