Luxury lifestyle brand Equinox has partnered with workspace provider Industrious to create a flexible co-working space in New York’s Hudson Yards.
Industrious at Equinox is a 4,088-square-metre co-branded outpost in 31 Hudson Yards, a 72-storey tower shared by the first-ever Equinox Hotel and the largest Equinox fitness club.
Industrious‘ in-house design studio, led by Matt Bosserman, executed the design of the 71 private offices and common areas that span two floors.
“Both Industrious and Equinox aim to provide a premium member experience, which made it quite easy to collaborate,” Bosserman told Dezeen.
Bosserman and team chose a palette of materials and design details to represent the emerging district of Hudson Yards as a starting point.
“Industrious’s design ethos is focused on crafting environments rooted in honest and timeless materials that reflect the building and neighbourhood,” said Bosserman.
“Our understated, modern aesthetic allows members to inject their own personality into the space,” he added. “Equinox, on the other hand, is known for their dramatic, rich palettes.”
Industrious at Equinox’s “great room” is anchored by a large communal table with blue-velvet chairs, and peppered with banquette seating areas, modular couches and banana leaf prints. Finishes like fluted millwork and textured charcoal wallpaper recall Hudson Yards’ contemporary “steely” aesthetic.
“Conference rooms and offices offer premier acoustical solutions to ensure quiet, seamless meetings,” added Bosserman. “Second-to-none hospitality offering includes premier coffee bar and daily food and beverage options for members.”
The main area leads into a bilevel zone with a spiral metal staircase haloed by a custom-made chandelier.
Private offices line the perimeter, overlooking the Hudson River and Thomas Heatherwick’s Vessel sculpture through floor-to-ceiling windows. Design elements include custom Madera wide plank white oak floors, exposed concrete pillars, wood wall panelling and four-metre ceilings.
Among the 90-plus Industrious workspaces across the US, Bosserman said the Hudson Yards location “is the most elevated Industrious location to date, with luxurious and custom materials and finishes throughout”.
Soho-based Innovations crafted the textured and patterned wallcoverings, Tribeca Stone provided stone for counters and baseboards, and custom acoustic panels for extensive soundproofing came from DFB Sales in Long Island City.
Industrious and Equinox intend to collaborate on a number of other co-branded workspaces.
The project forms the latest venture by Equinox, which was established as a luxury fitness company in 1991 but has recently expanded its offerings into other areas.
It recently opened its first hotel, designed by Joyce Wang and David Rockwell, and has future outposts in Houston, Los Angeles and Chicago currently in development.
31 Hudson Yards is part of the first phase of the city’s Hudson Yards development, which was built over an active rail yard on Manhattan’s West Side.
Phase one also includes The Shed, a telescoping cultural hub designed by Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, two sister office towers and another corporate block by Hudson Yards masterplanner KPF and a tall building by Foster + Partners.
