A Light Addition / Office MI—JI

March 5, 2026 Pilar Caballero 0

A renovation for another level, this addition utilises the existing steel structure to elevate two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a garden above the low-lying existing single-storey house. Responding to the expressed client brief for space, light, and air, the additional level breathes new life into the tight site without inhibiting views out across the neighbouring rooftops. Set around a multi-faceted highlight window detail, the new spaces are given the air they deserve, providing the family with a new dimension of liveability while minimising the destruction and waste of the existing building.

The Multi-Purpose Social Center is an initiative promoted by the Concello de Carballeda de Avia as part of an ambitious rural revitalization plan for the Model Village of Muimenta. The initiative aims to activate a rural core in the process of abandonment by recovering the adjacent lands with high productive capacity, as well as rehabilitating its built environment. Through this new governance model, the goal is to improve the quality of life for its inhabitants, encourage the retention of the younger population, and generate attractions for new residents, promoting economic activity in the land, the recovery of traditional crafts, the provision of affordable housing, and the improvement of technological services.

Heyi office / DPAA Design

February 21, 2026 韩爽 - HAN Shuang 0

The project is situated within a garment-focused industrial park in Guangzhou, where the primary activities encompass office operations and production. The original structure is a three-story, cube-shaped building with a frame system—consistent with most structures in the park, it abuts the main thoroughfare directly, enclosed on all sides, and presents an almost collisional interface with the street front, lacking any form of buffer zone. The design brief calls for the transformation of this cubic building into a garment design office capable of accommodating approximately 100 occupants. The high occupancy density, combined with the inherently strong functional attributes of the office typology, introduces a pronounced sense of spatial density to the site. Against the backdrop of prioritizing functional requirements, the design process is initiated.

Dollhouse Loft / StudioAC

February 17, 2026 Pilar Caballero 0

Located in Leslieville, in Toronto’s east end, this loft renewal project set out to enhance the interior both aesthetically and functionally. Once a toy and bottling factory throughout the 1900s, the building became live/work lofts in the early 2000s. As time wore down the quality of finishes and fixtures, a new opportunity emerged to rework the loft’s spatial dynamics.

Painter N’s House / a.co.lab

The “Artist N’s House” is a remodeling project of a single-family house originally built in 1969, where an artist couple had lived for over a decade. Rather than replacing the existing structure, the project began with the question of how to preserve the accumulated lifestyle of both the residents and the surrounding neighborhood, while introducing new spatial possibilities suited to contemporary life.

The more than 300 modular student dormitories on the VUB campus, designed by modernist architect Willy Van Der Meeren in 1972, were once at risk of demolition. Today, the twelve modules included in this project not only act as a catalyst for preservation but also guide the transition of the remaining buildings towards a circular renovation model.

BM House / ErranteArchitetture

February 10, 2026 Pilar Caballero 0

At the entrance to the Po Valley, in the province of Cuneo, a house with a simple, compact profile reveals itself gradually. The construction does not appear to flaunt striking gestures, but rather blends discreetly among its neighbors — tall apartment blocks, clumsy detached houses, a constellation of buildings without particular quality. Yet appearances are deceiving. A radical transformation, partly concealed within its own volume, lies at the origin of ErranteArchitetture’s project for Casa BM: an intervention that dismantles the existing structure to generate new spatial configurations and distinct atmospheres. It is an apparently paradoxical operation, conducted in the spirit of artistic research and self-construction practices.
