The Avber House / OFIS Architects

Project Overview
On a hilltop overlooking the Karst plateau lies the village of Avber — a tightly clustered settlement shaped by stone, wind, and time. Here, a homestead has been carefully revitalized for an Australian client whose family traces its roots back to this very village. The project reconnects him not only to a place but also to the architectural traditions of his ancestors. What emerges is more than a renovation: it is a cultural return, a home re-established within a fabric marked by the fierce winter burja winds, the weight of stone, and the memory of community life.

House C transforms a minimal 32 m² apartment into a continuous, luminous interior landscape deeply connected to the sea. What was once a fragmented and irregular dwelling is reinterpreted as a single, legible space, freed from unnecessary partitions in order to allow a clear and uninterrupted reading of the whole. Only the bathroom remains enclosed, conceived as an autonomous cabin that preserves intimacy while reinforcing the perception of the apartment as a single room.

The Xinhepu Historical and Cultural Precinct is imbued with rich historical layers and urban memories. This enhancement initiative deliberately avoids large-scale demolition and reconstruction. Instead, it follows a strategy of “micro-regeneration and refined enhancement,” focusing on reconnecting the precinct’s spatial network. Guided by the “one building, one tailored solution” to architectural restoration and driven by the goal of improving everyday livability, the project employs meticulous craftsmanship and techniques. The ultimate aim is to foster a vibrant precinct where historical character and contemporary life exist in symbiosis.

Urban living is largely defined by a settled lifestyle. Typically, people anchor their lives around the home, radiating outward to the street and further connecting to workplaces and social activities—together forming a tightly woven living grid. As the starting point of family life, a residence is not merely a place for basic daily functions; it often doubles as a space for professional activity as well. A comfortable living environment often unfolds from the ordinary and familiar acts: dining, sleeping, washing, connecting with others, or engaging in hands-on labor. These moments of daily life construct a complex and secretive spatial structure.

When planning a commercial space, it is not easy to sacrifice usable space. This is especially true in areas with high unit prices, where most prefer to maximize the display space by ensuring more circulation space in narrow areas.
