Xietu Sub-District Kanghui Community Space / atelier mearc

Xietu Sub-District is located in the northeast corner of Xuhui District adjacent to the border with Huangpu District. From the 1950s to 1990s, workers new villages, multi-story houses and high-rise commercial buildings, each representing a different period of urban life, formed various and rich neighborhoods. Kangju Community is one of the 19 communities of Xietu Sub-Districts. The status quo is: that people who live in different lined up and staggered residences are actual strangers to each other even though they live in the same neighborhood not only natural barriers in age, and background but also perception differences.

Multipurpose Space / OBO Estudi

The town council of Sant Esteve de Palautordera decided to give up the football pitch in the sports area to make way for a new multi-purpose covered space to accommodate all the needs of its growing social fabric. The plot, located at one end of the municipality, was divided into three terraces or platforms occupied by a road at the top, a children’s playground in the middle and a football pitch separated by an inaccessible slope acting as an urban “cul de sac”.

In 2018, Mexico City’s government launched the PILARES initiative (an acronym for Points of Innovation, Freedom, Art, Education, and Knowledge) that would result in one hundred community centers distributed across the most underserved neighborhoods in the city. Each PILARES building is designed to support various kinds of classes and workshops in support of skill building, as well as bringing cultural programming, learning opportunities, and safe spaces for leisure and cross-generational gatherings to each neighborhood.

Inwang Guard Post Forest Retreat / Soltozibin Architects + SN Architecture

Inwangsan Mountain, Seochon, Wihang literature. Han River and the mountains around grant Seoul a character of its own. Outer mountains surround the exterior of Seoul, and the four gates inside are surrounded by inner mountains again. Inwangsan mountain, which is one of the inner mountains, has a connected story within the old residence between the small streams. While looking up the history of Inwangsan Mountain and Seochon, we learned about Wihang literature written by the middle class of the Chosun dynasty. We noticed the paradox Wihang literature possessed, being able to influence the noble class society era although lower class members wrote it. Unfortunately, the middle class could become a group of intellect but could not escape the limit of their birth-given class.

Shanghai Minhang Squirrel & Mountain Nurturing Community Building Renovation and Renewal / Partyfriendship

The Squirrel & Mountain Nurturing Community (Songshan Community) is one of China’s first nature-based, integrated communities featuring art, culture, and farming. It was established in 2021 to create an environment where people are treated fairly whether they are able-bodied or have disabilities. The community also includes a small art gallery, restaurant, tea house, meditation space, woodworking workshop, and theater. After years of development, the original space is no longer adequate, they plan to complete a participatory transformation of an old textile factory in the village in the fall of 2023. The land used for the Gaobei Community Neighborhood Center project was originally a real estate sales office. After completing its mission, it has been abandoned for nearly ten years, with damp water and the breeding of mosquitoes. Although the site is large and has lush vegetation, it cannot be used.

Okinosu Indoor Park / GEO-GRAPHIC DESIGN LAB

Renovation of a former newspaper printing center for contemporary applications. The Tokushima Shimbun Company’s former newspaper printing center, situated in the eastern sector of Tokushima City—was bestowed upon Tokushima Prefecture in 2020 following the relocation of its operational functionalities. Despite its vintage of 25 years, the prefecture has resolved to repurpose the printing center into a “Transportation hub for disaster relief supplies” in times of calamity. The prefectural authorities organized a comprehensive hardware and software design competition, encompassing the building’s utilization in regular circumstances, proposals for renovation, and sustainable business plans.

Hunan Street Public Service Station / Steamarch

The Hunan Street Public Service Station is located in the center of Shanghai. The original building was composed of public toilets, a garbage transfer station and a janitor’s lounge. With the development of tourism and urban regeneration in recent years, the original building has become increasingly difficult to meet the requirements of the public and the authority in terms of external image and internal functional configuration. After the public call for proposals, professional evaluation and public voting, our renovation plan was successfully won and implemented.

Located in the Wild Island Community of Huizhou, gogoland is a pet-friendly public social space brimming with a sense of history brought by the architecture and an inviting vibe. Its unique location in the neighborhood has played a crucial role in establishing the brand. Through thoughtful design approaches, Informal Design has integrated human-pet bonding with the surrounding natural environment, resulting in a natural social space themed as a pet paradise.

Torrefiel-Orriols Neighborhood Equality Unit / 7a+i

The Torrefiel-Orriols Equality Unit in Valencia is the second neighborhood office to open in the city, and the first to have its own space, a ground floor apartment in a set of protected housing units around Plaza Salvador Allende, which is very representative in the area and houses other facilities.
