In this week’s comments update, readers are debating the newly revealed visuals of Frank Gehry’s tallest-ever residential skyscrapers and other top stories.
The Forma project will comprise two towers, a 298-metre-tall western and a 262-metre-tall eastern tower, which will be the tallest residential towers ever designed by Gehry.
“Facade chaos, interior plush-spartan”
Readers were not convinced by the visuals of the skyscrapers, which will hold luxury condominiums, as well as an extension campus for the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD).
“Wasted a lot of stainless steel to create a thoroughly off-putting exterior texture,” said George Panagos.
“After a few rains, all that shiny stainless steel will be covered and dulled by a dirty film much like windows are,” said Jack Woodburn.
“Shiny buildings are always a bad idea, at some point during the day drivers will be blinded,” added T Foxe. “I am really tired of architects and designers showing off instead of addressing real-world needs.”

“What happens when it hits hectic swells and breakers at sea?”
Yacht design studios Van Geest Design and Rob Doyle Design devised a trimaran concept that aims to be “the first truly zero-emission yacht over 750 gross tonnage”, sparking debate among our readers.
Zea Newland was not convinced: “You know what else is zero emissions? Every superyacht that doesn’t get built.”
“I don’t understand why people bash yachts but glorify a useless $5 million, two-seater hypercar they’ll never ever afford,” said Bsl. “This yacht, on the other hand, looks very livable, and probably less expensive than an apartment in most major European cities.”
“What happens when it hits hectic swells and breakers at sea?” asked Mattmo. “Does it go through or over? That’s a big surface area for a wave to come crashing down upon.”

Los Angeles “home within a house” is “lovely” and “beautiful” say commenters
Readers were impressed with this California home that was designed for art-loving clients.
“Very unusual layout but beautifully executed and looks to work really well,” said The Discreet Architect. “Love the built-in storage which keeps everything looking very clean and the roof lights create a very light interior.”
“Really lovely house,” agreed JZ. “Well, conceptualised and detailed. And, oh, the luxury of a 2,200 square-foot, one-bedroom home.”

“Glitch architecture is back”
Readers were unimpressed with ODA’s design for a two-skyscraper Ombelle development in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
“Eventually Fort Lauderdale will be nothing but high-rise buildings and the only people that will live there are the wealthy,” said Ken Steffes. “They are tearing down all its history and character, and turning the city into an overpopulated destination for tourists.”
HeywoodFloyd was also not a fan: “These guys and their sophomoric forms that keep getting passed off as being worthy of discussion.” “It’s like BIG lite, and before you ask, yes I realise that is a redundant concept,” he continued.
