pere and kedelauk form zig-zag aluminium roof over sauna in estonia

architects, peeter pere and eva kedelauk, have formed a sauna in the village of varbola in estonia. the design combines a new sauna space with an existing wooden sauna, enveloping the two under a zig-zag metal roof. the new roof mirrors the former pitched profile to create a new layer that floats above the timber structure.

pere and kedelauk have designed the sauna amongst a wooded area, which creates a complementary backdrop to the strikingly angular silhouette. a material palette of aluminium and timber has been employed to form an interesting contrast between old and new. the new roof also incorporates openings around the trees which grow on the site. the inclusion of the trees also mirrors the metal columns used to support the structure.

the design of the interior is planned to house the various sauna functions as well as large open areas for communal spaces. this space benefits from a framed view of the natural surroundings, visually connecting the indoor to the outdoors. at night, the overall form of the building is beautifully illuminated and it becomes a beacon, inviting people into the warmth of the sauna.
