House 108 / Grieve Gillett Andersen

April 18, 2020 Pilar Caballero 0

Tucked behind the typical single storey façade of an eastern suburbs bungalow is the delightful two-storey design of House 108.  With extensive external timber cladding, large windows and strong connections to outdoor areas, House 108 feels more like a New Zealand cabin than an inner-city house in Adelaide, South Australia. The owners of House 108 engaged Grieve Gillett Andersen initially to look at improvements to the functionality of the kitchen and a living area of their house. Over time it was evident that extra space was desirable to accommodate their growing family and the owners decided to upgrade the house rather than relocate.

Radical neofuturist architect Jan Kaplický (18 April 1937 – 14 January 2009) was the son of a sculptor and a botanical illustrator, and appropriately spent his career creating highly sculptural and organic forms. Working with partner Amanda Levete at his suitably-named practice Future Systems, Kaplický was catapulted to fame after his sensationally avant-garde 1999 Lord’s Cricket Ground Media Centre and became a truly innovative icon of avant-garde architecture.

Situated in front of the Grand Postal Building during Bangkok Design Week 2020, Safezone Shelter is an ephemeral intervention, aiming to purify air and provide comfort for people, while also raising awareness about “air pollution,” which becomes a critical concern for many societies. Looking at Bangkok, according to the World Air Quality Index of 2019, it has 54% of total days in a year in which particulate matter (PM) was measured over WHO’s standard level, threatening over one-third of inhabitants.
