Oostenburg Housing Complex / Space Encounters

June 4, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Oostenburg is one of the last urban transformation areas in the center of Amsterdam where former industrial production has made way for inner-city housing over time. In collaboration with OZ, Workshop Architects, and BETA, Space Encounters designed a striking housing complex as part of a large building block that surrounds the historical Werkspoorhal at the heart of the area. The post-industrial site is currently being transformed into a vibrant and high-density residential neighborhood. Between a selection of historical and more recent buildings, a new, mixed urban context is being realized, consisting of buildings that differ in scale and size, and have inviting plinths and variations in the design of their rooflines. The Oostenburg project by Space Encounters was shaped with these parameters in mind to provide high-quality high-density living.

Situated between two neighborhoods, 212 Stuart Street negotiates the intimate residential scale of historic Bay Village and the high-rise scale of Boston’s High Spine. Moving away from the more traditional all-glass high rises in the city, the team sought to bring quality and depth to the urban façade. Employing an innovative approach to materials and construction, the building’s distinctive façade consists of fluted piers that vary in scale across the envelope and resonate with the masonry detailing of the historic neighborhood.

Ahmedabad University Centre / Stephane Paumier Architects

The brief for the Ahmedabad University Centre was created organically with the University Board as a hub for the in-between hours of formal teaching. The aim was to create a center that would become an incubator for academic life and a place for generating new ideas by creating interactive spaces besides formal educational functions. Being located at the vehicular entrance with underground parking, it also acts as a gateway between the city and the pedestrian university campus. The culture of street food is crucial to the fabric of Ahmedabad and student life, it was essential to design the food court as an extension of the street, leading to a food street at ground level. Inspired by the exciting bridge, Galata Koprusu, that links Galata to Eminonu in Istanbul and has a string of restaurants below and views on the Golden Horn, the three verandahs opening to the park can also be used for music performances while sitting under the trees.

Oredalstunet – In collaboration with Solid Prosjekt, Line Solgard architects were commissioned to develop one of the city’s hidden jewels in Ordalen, centrally located in Fredrikstad and within walking distance of all of the city’s facilities. Close to the center and close to the town square. The plot was an overgrown natural plot of 6,280 m2 with four wonderful oak trees and an old dilapidated house with a tired barn. The plot was recently regulated for seven detached houses. The homes are placed between the mighty oaks and form a shared outdoor space with a playground and access road. Together, the 7 homes surround a community that creates a cozy and child-friendly street garden that highlights the mighty oak trees that have been an important landmark in the local area for a long time.

An Urban House / MISA ARCHITECTS

May 30, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

An urban house on a big, busy street generally creates the picture of a high, impermeable, and seemingly invisible fortress within. But does it have to be so dead, uninviting, and distant in its approach and appearance? With a quite tight design brief, we decided to break this, and use it to do the opposite – make a lively, inviting, and approachable home.

Line Solgaard’s latest cabin project “Kjerringholmen” lies on a small island, in Hvaler, Norway. The clients bought this small private island on which to build a holiday home. The cabin demonstrates the idea that large houses don’t necessarily mean more quality of life. In just 63 square meters, with smart planning, it still has plenty of usable space.
