Kindergartens represent the first public space that children encounter in their growth process. The scale of the space, the flexibility of its use, and the indoor scenes and atmosphere greatly influence young children’s perceptions and cognitions, presenting a challenge for architects. Yuyao Road Kindergarten is a first-class kindergarten in Shanghai, located in the modern upscale residential area of the northwest corner of Jing’an District. Since its establishment in 1957, it has undergone a 48-year journey in preschool education. For many years, Yuyao Road Kindergarten has adhered to the principle of “everything for the children,” a philosophy that Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects also upholds in various educational buildings. Through our design, we aim to inspire children’s desire to explore and acquire knowledge, while providing them a comfort, safe place, creating a paradise that children love.

Vertical Extension on Avenue Wendt / Lecroix Chessex

June 7, 2024 Valeria Silva 0

This two-floor vertical extension project on Avenue Wendt is located next to a pair of neighboring buildings that were also recently added on floors. From a volume perspective, this facilitated the extension’s integration and acceptance. Our architectural expression and vision, however, were not congruous with a solution aimed at architectural continuity.

Chapel of St Anthony of Padua in Fryšták / Karel Filsak Architects

June 5, 2024 Valeria Silva 0

In Fryšták in Czechia, a chapel consecrated to Saint Anthony of Padua has been built in raw brick by a rocky outcrop between Vítová and Horní Ves, on the slopes of the Hostýn Hills. The authors of this cylindrical building are Zdeněk Rothbauer (born in 1941) and Karel Filsak (1985), who based it on early Christian churches with circular floor plans. This modest sanctuary is dominated by circles, Greek crosses, and bare brickwork. The building material and the simple geometrical forms were not just guided by the architects’ inner conviction, for they also point to the essential humility of the Franciscan Order.

Stillness and Motion. Through the perpetual interaction between glaciers and seawater, the glacial ice, which boasts an average age exceeding 5,000 years, will ultimately drift toward the ocean and transform into icebergs that undergo continuous displacement by the flux of ocean currents. In our opinion, the fascination of icebergs lies not only in the thousands of years of unchanging ice, and the unpredictable location due to drifting. It also stems from the mysterious seven-eighths concealed beneath the sea’s surface, as the writer Ernest Hemingway mentioned.

The project has its roots in the arid topography of the Cyclades and its white walls emerge from it, unfolding like a ribbon in the landscape forming the volumes of the house and the external and internal living spaces.

Miel & Eline House / atelier vens vanbelle

Miel and Eline bought Irene’s house with accompanying pub and stable. Not long before, this house was a weekly stop for a handful of farmers from a village outside Ghent. On Thursday mornings at five o’clock there was the weekly cattle market, so every Wednesday evening the cows were unloaded here and escorted to the stable behind the house. Afterward, the former resident Irene served some beers in the café on the street side, just like in about twenty other so-called slaughterhouse cafés in what was considered one of the roughest neighborhoods in Ghent thirty years ago. Today this district is a popular neighborhood with only a few vague memories of the past.
