What Happens If Hempcrete Catches Fire?

August 31, 2021 Eduardo Souza 0

Every time we publish an article about Hempcrete, we get a lot of comments on social media – with a certain level of irony – about what would happen if the material caught fire. This is actually a legitimate question, as there is still a lot of confusion about the differences between marijuana and hemp, both of which come from the same plant species (Cannabis Sativa). But while marijuana has psychoactive effects due to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), mainly present in the flowers of the plant, hemp-based building materials are produced from its stem, which contains small doses of THC. To quickly answer the title question: no, the building won’t be destroyed in the event of a fire. In fact, some tests have shown that these materials have excellent behavior against fire, dissipate flames, maintain structural integrity, and don’t emit toxic smoke.

McNeal 020 Pavilion / Atelier David Telerman

August 31, 2021 韩双羽 - HAN Shuangyu 0

McNeal 020 emerged from the desire of David Telerman and a private client based in France to build a perennial structure in the American desert, Southern Arizona, in response to the shared fascination for the surrealist nature, which brought years before artists such as Max Ernst in search of new forms. By bringing together the raw elements of the surrounding place, the building must offer a landscape to experience, as a photographer or a painter would do with their own means, with precise attention to the vastness of the desert, the weight of the wind, and the geometrical precision of the light.

The building is located on a hill in the old town boundary. The site was 55 meters long, while its width ranged from 1.5 meters to 6 meters. The difference in its elevation was 8 meters. The long and thin site faces the commercial building of Saint Joseph Apartment (one of the oldest apartments in Seoul) on the other side of the 4-meter-wide road. At a glance, the new building would look like a Mini-Me of the apartment, or it would be extended from its part. Hence, the new building has been designed focusing on the continuity of the road as a flow rather than on the building as a mass.

Mallorca’s Abandoned Buildings

August 31, 2021 Fabian Dejtiar 0

A building stands out along the maritime walkway in Palma, Mallorca’s capital. Designed by José Ferragut Pou and completed in 1960, the building was a poster child for the modern architectural movement sweeping the globe at that time. Today, like many of its brethren, it stands in abandoned  disrepair.
