Planar House / DADA Partners

Planar house is an exploration of assembling a series of detached monolithic planar volumes along the main body of the home. This layered assembly and the resulting gaps create unexpected chasm-like spatial experiences. The cast-in-situ rugged concrete planar wall, along with stucco walls on the upper levels, emerge from the F-shaped house plan and take on the role of being a two-sided canvas for the sun to impart it’s constantly shifting shadows.

Araras Pavilion / Venta Arquitetos

The project is located on a plot of land already occupied by the main residence and a leisure area, in which context it was decided to build a pavilion to house two guest suites and a residence for the caretaker. The area earmarked for construction has a steep slope, around 60%, and an important group of trees to be preserved. It is also a passageway between a group of cherry trees, located on the highest part, and trees considered native, in the lower part of the area. One aspect that largely determined the design and construction strategy was the time available for all stages, including the construction work, which was 200 days.

The Baronesa Apartment originally boasted a well-structured layout, featuring a spacious living room with a balcony, a master bedroom, and two additional bedrooms. The clients expressed their desire for a fully renovated kitchen, one that is luminous and expansive, capable of seamlessly integrating with the living room or being closed off as needed for daily activities. To fulfill this vision, we devised a sliding door that offers flexibility: it can be fully opened, recessed into the wall, or closed altogether.

Shanghai Foreign Language School Affiliated with SISU is a “fairy school” in the minds of Shanghai parents. The school is located in the old urban area of Hongkou District of Shanghai, not only with the inner ring elevated and metro line 3 rail bridge to the southeast, but also old communities under renovation to the southwest which is facing irregular land use, complex interfaces, and high building density. There are three main points in the renewal design of this kind of campus: complexity and difficulty, small project size, and short construction time. It is often difficult to control the design and construction quality of this kind of project.

The apartment suits its inhabitants. The young resident’s main request for her first home was a clean apartment, with soft tones, that provides a comfortable day-to-day life. Giving priority to the dining room on the balcony, the layout of the center of the social area is designed as an island, with a partition for meal preparation, space to sit at the counter, and also to accommodate the back of the living room sofa.

With the rapid development of Shenzhen, the urban population increased rapidly. It was up to 17.56 million in 2021. At the same time, there is a huge gap of places. The gap of places in Grade 1 of elementary schools in the whole city was 49,500 and that in the first year of junior high school was 10,600 in 2020. The highly intensive urban construction land has also led to a lack of land for the construction of elementary and secondary schools. There is a sharp contradiction between the gap of places and the lack of land for the construction of schools.

The Meatpacking District in Manhattan has undergone a series of dramatic transformations in scale and use throughout its history. Small lots were consolidated over time into larger properties to support manufacturing and warehouse functions during the district’s industrial heyday. As the neighborhood transitioned into its current state of high-end retail and hospitality, this upscaling has continued.
