Ma Yansong was invited by Guangdong Nanhai Art Field to complete an art installation named “Timeless Beacon” in Taiping Xu, Nanhai, Guangdong province of China. The design renovated Taiping market, known as the largest abandoned building in Taiping Xu, a once bustling fair established in the late Ming Dynasty and flourished for centuries until the 1980s when fishermen, businessmen, and villagers gathered there for trading.
Cotton Park is a large collection store based in the community, including three functional modules: coffee, clothing retail, and parent-child activity area. We abandoned the design method based on functional zoning, and took a completely homogeneous and abstract space model as the basis of design, allowing an adaptive structural unit to grow on its own. In this way, the experience part of space is formed first: scale, weight, boundary, sense of enclosure, and mobility. The second step is to superimpose the functional area on the system and fine-tune the system to form the final design result.

Yada Theater is located in Yangxian Xishan of Yixing, a county-level city of Jiangsu Province in China’s southeastern region rich in cultural and natural resources. Since the Song dynasty, Yixing has been the capital of Chinese pottery production, known for its clayware. In addition, it contains China’s largest bamboo forest, a significant tourist attraction. In the contemporary context of urbanization, Yangxian Xishan is a successful rural revitalization practice of Yixing. It is the first small town development to achieve territorial openness and self-operation, and Yada Theater is the cultural landmark of the town. Adjacent to Yangxian Lake, the site is in a hilly terrain covered by 400 hectares of primitive bamboo forests. Mountains, bamboo groves, and lakes comprise the local landscape system. Within this unique geographical condition, Yada Theater incorporates existing ecological aesthetics into its design. It develops a new approach to a cultural venue by integrating architectural morphology with nature in a manner that embraces modernity while conserving regional identity.

Located in Shenzhen, China, one of the top ten UNESCO Cities of Design, the new headquarters was completed after six years of construction, adding a prominent, sustainable new landmark to the city skyline.
The Ginkgo Swan Lake is located in the Xiushui New District of Jiaxing. Based on a natural environment with abundant water resources, the project integrates the local rich traditional culture. At the same time, it adds unique moments, such as the ginkgo forest, the lake sightseeing mini-train, the art museum, the original ecological bird island, and the waterside homestay hotel. It is committed to creating a future community to experience life in harmonious coexistence of ecology and nature, wisdom and technology, art and humanities.
MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, has completed its first built project “UNIC” in Europe. It is a thirteen-story apartment complex in the newly developed neighborhood of Clichy-Batignolles in the 17th arrondissement of Paris, France. When the firm was selected to design UNIC on one of nine plots assigned to both local and international architects and developers in 2012, MAD Architects’ founder and principal Ma Yansong not only became the first Chinese architect to design a major building in Paris but the entirety of Europe as well.
On a coal-unloading wharf deserted for years remains a reinforced concrete wall of 90 meters long and 4 meters high. This used to be an untrodden place but was at the center of the energy supply for Shanghai. Nevertheless, since the waterfront had been occupied mostly by factories, residents nearby could hardly get to the riverside and lacked enough communal space. During the process of transforming the industrial site into public space, the existing ordinary industrial component is to serve as a significant historic aspect and a witness of Shanghai industrial civilization, to be unveiled in the new space.
A stand-alone in the mountains, it’s a 4-floor building for 4, from B1 to 3 floors. Aside from the main house, a small hut, made of steel and yakisugi, is for yoga and tea. Elevated, it becomes part of nature and the tree. The concept of the overall design is based on the impression of a “mountain”, making the space and activities grow organically like the free spreading nature of trees. Taking advantage of the various offset levels of floor heights and vertical extension of the space, we created an interior spatial experience reflective of mountain climbing, where the scenery changes with each turn and corner, thereby changing the mood as you travel through the interior space.
