Located on a parklike site in a northern suburb of Detroit with the River Rouge running through it, this 4,000sf Y-shaped home opens to an elaborate landscape that the homeowner has cultivated for over 40 years. We planned the new head office for Uchida Shōten, a hardware manufacturer established 160 years ago in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The surrounding area flourished as Fujisawa-juku, the sixth post town along the Tōkaidō road during the Edo period, a town lined with inns, teahouses, and merchants. Traces of this history remain in places, and the site itself is characterised by its narrow, elongated townhouse-style plot.

This project is a direct response to the history of the region as well as its surroundings. It transforms what was originally a summer home into a year-round residence and, in doing so, adds uses that allow for this change, specifically a studio and workshops. Using language derived from New England agrarian architecture, formal archetypes and materials such as corrugated metal siding and open-joint rainscreen allude to barns, grain silos, and drying sheds.

The design for this home is derived from the challenges of building on a remote island in the Northeast with very limited access to tradespeople and building materials. With no cargo boat or barge access to the island, all equipment and materials must arrive by passenger ferry within strict size and weight limits. The home on a coastal bluff must also be durable to withstand violent storms and simple to repair due to the limited access to tradespeople.

The concept of the planning of the auditorium complex in Coimbatore is purely based on location and function. It was the client who clearly stated that the building must not obstruct any vision either from outside the campus or from inside. Any other form other than a dome would have been catastrophic.
