China’s rural schools are disappearing with the rapid speed of urbanization process. this primary school is one of these schools. It is one of the”backward schools” in the remote countryside, with outdated facilities and insufficient teachers. The key goal of this project is to make them possible to provide better education and better environment.

As part of an urban renewal scheme, the town of Vaulx-en-Velin decided to combine with this large school group a number of programmes offering neighbourhood services, including a creche, a dance hall, a sports hall, a small library, and a restaurant. The building has a very unitary appearance, with the classrooms spread over a length of 40 metres as if on a bridge. It clearly asserts its status as a public facility.

Creating an Open and Vibrant Campus
The project of “the Affiliated School of the College of Education, Zhejiang University” is planned to be a middle school of 36 classes, which is located near Zhijiang Bridge, Binjiang District, Hangzhou. The urban Spaces surrounding the project are dense and homogeneous, and the architects wanted the school to become a vibrant oasis in a modern concrete forest, which is not only a place of learning but also an active community learning centre. To integrate “sunshine, green ground and space” into the campus to the maximum extent, the building itself becomes the link between various functions and areas of the school by means of stilt, interspersing, overlapping, staggered and roof garden. The multi-elevation roof terrace is also endowed with different functions and teaching significance, which also enriches the fifth facade of the campus vertically.

The objective of the project is to maximize the spatial synergies both between the local area and the campus and within the campus itself. This will allow the new educational campus to position itself as a laboratory and a testing station for new educational practices – in a similar way to a kaleidoscope. The multifaceted, north-south oriented volume of the educational campus meanders across the site, creating three different and contrastingly treated external areas: a publically accessible, v-shaped forecourt, located on the street to the west, a richly planted area of open green space for the campus, and a third area that is dominated by the sports hall and the multipurpose hard court.

About 100 years have passed since renowned Swedish architect Ferdinand Boberg designed the Gasworks of Stockholm. A prestigious project with powerful architecture of brick and granite, but also of delicate embellishment. Today the production of gas has vacated the premises and the Gasworks are becoming the cultural centre of one of Europe’s largest urban developments: The Stockholm Royal Seaport. The two large gasometers still dominate the cityscape and at their base, as part of the Gasworks linear and production based structure, the new Bobergskolan has been neatly fitted, designed to be a comprehensive school for 900 students from the ages of six to 15.
