Brick House is a recently completed private residence located in the heart of Pune’s dense urban fabric. Occupying a compact footprint of 4500 square feet, the design is a considered response to the spatial constraints and climatic challenges of its context. The project is rooted in a conscious reinterpretation of traditional Indian architectural principles while integrating a restrained material palette and passive design strategies suited for contemporary urban living.

YMK House / Takeshi Hirobe Architects

This residence was designed for a client who relocated from the city to a rural highland area with the intention to work remotely. The site is characterized by a gentle slope that runs from the west side, which faces a road, to the east before dropping sharply. A small stream flows below, forming a modest valley. As a result, there is a significant distance between the residence and the nearest house, located across the valley, and the view on this side is marked by trees that cascade down the slope in a dense, layered arrangement. To make the most of these surroundings, the southeast corner of the residence was designed to accommodate a large picture window.

Taliru is a multigenerational residence designed for a family of five, grandparents, parents, and a teenage son who envisioned a home rooted in simplicity, continuity, and everyday comfort. Drawing inspiration from traditional courtyard houses, the project explores how light, ventilation, greenery, and water can become integral components of daily living rather than ornamental features. The design process evolved through close dialogue with the family, prioritizing lifestyle, cultural memory, and long-term adaptability over stylistic trends.

L’appartement Hu / OUJ

After the pandemic, the elderly parents and their daughters, previously living in southern and northern Taiwan, began considering future care needs and decided to live together in Taipei. Located in a 40-year-old public housing complex, this 72-sqm apartment navigates two opposing conditions: the tranquil greenery of the Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab to the south, and the bustle of a major commercial boulevard to the north. The low ceilings and original layout with three small bedrooms intensified the narrow proportions and the sense of enclosure. Moreover, iron window grilles and fixed AC units obstructed the openings, severely compromising natural light and ventilation.

Old Folk House in Iwakura / td-Atelier

April 5, 2026 Miwa Negoro 0

This project is the renovation of a traditional house located in Iwakura, in the northern part of Kyoto City. Although its exact origin is unclear, it is presumed to be a farmhouse built in the Meiji period. According to archival research, the building conforms to the typology of the “Iwakura-type minka (folk house).” This regional house type is characterized by a linear doma (earthen-floored passage) running north–south, with rooms arranged alongside it, and by a robust timber beam structure. The building is therefore considered to date from the late Edo to the Meiji period. Further investigation, including registry records and architectural surveys, revealed that extensions and alterations were carried out in the 1970s.

Serindang House 2 / PSA Studio

The process of designing this building began with the challenge of creating an extension to a structure that had been in place for nearly two decades since its initial construction. The original building was completed in 2008, while the expansion was carried out in 2025. This time gap is not merely a matter of changing spatial needs, but also involves bridging two distinct design eras—connecting the context of the old building with the requirements of the new one.

Sunrise Garden Restaurant / M9 Design Studio

April 4, 2026 Miwa Negoro 0

Located within an industrial suburb of Bangalore, Sunrise Garden Restaurant emerges as a quiet counterpoint to its context — transforming a previously utilitarian structure into a layered spatial experience rooted in the idea of the garden as a place of pause, gathering, and imagination. Conceived as an urban oasis, the project explores how architecture can introduce softness, greenery, and sensory calm within an otherwise rugged industrial landscape.
