Haffenden House / PARA

November 22, 2019 Igor Fracalossi 0

The Haffenden House is a writing studio with a garage/breezeway at ground-level, library and writing space on the second level, and a curved/soft reading room on the third level. The project finds itself within the suburban realm, referencing Gianni Pettena’s Ice House from 1972, like a blank spot within the repetitive image of “house.”

El Mirador House / CC Arquitectos

October 15, 2019 Igor Fracalossi 0

El Mirador serves its purpose as it is located on an edge of the site, where the emblematic lake of the area can be seen from above. It was designed based on respecting the forest where it is located, anchored to its topography and reducing its constructive impact. The materials used are from the region, and railroad ties from old train tracks where recycled for the exterior cladding.

A hilltop meadow on an old Garrison farmstead is the site for this roughly 350 square foot multipurpose play space, called a ‘treehouse’ for its elevated position adjacent to a stand of trees. Occupiable on two levels—main floor, and crow’s nest—the treehouse consists of an inhabitable polycarbonate interior bounded by an exterior band of reclaimed white cedar siding, open to the sky.

Moose Road / Mork-Ulnes Architects

Three locally known land formations can be seen from the site of this project: “Eagle Rock”, a mountain ridge, and the valley of vineyards below. The main challenge was to frame these three separate views while at the same time, preserving each existing oak tree on site. The three fingers extend precisely in between the existing trees, each oriented toward a land formation.
