ADU as we understand from the term “Accessory Dwelling Unit” implies an accessory house that belongs to the main house. Our initial design was driven by rethinking the value of ADU not as a secondary house and discovering any overlooked aspects that might be interesting and effective in design. There are many reasons people are building ADU, but the intended use of this ADU is for a rental unit. Therefore, we constantly envisioned the future potential renters and their lifestyles when we design the building.

At a busy crossroads on the Brookline edge of Boston’s medical district, this gracefully curved and sculptural building deftly knits the verdant Olmstead Emerald Necklace with nearby commercial and residential blocks, decisively anchoring its prominent site. Wrapped in taut glass and comprised of three stepped masses, the building is highly responsive to its unique, urban setting.

Yusun-gwan Korea’s first modern inn, Yusun-gwan is located near Daeheungsa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally a temple lodging for traveling Buddhist monks and devotees, it began accepting ordinary visitors as customers in the late 1960s. Prior to renovation, the inn’s century-plus old buildings underwent gradual deformation, due to haphazard modification, and were deprived of their once pristine condition. As such, the renovation of these still-used buildings has focused less on the restoration of the “form” than on the restoration of the “” while ensuring the preservation of the buildings’ original form to the greatest extent possible.

The site was originally part of a large garden from its neighbor’s house, therefore the aim of this house was not to build in a residential area, but to build as if in a garden. The owner of the house plays a unique role as a Kappa street performer for his living. We initially thought there were only limited options for dealing with the plan and section of the house when we started planning a vertical flow line since a footprint is only about 23 square meters, and the maximum building height is 8 meters according to the building code of land.

Five Shadows, located on a prime site at the base of the Teton Mountain Range, belies the density of the surrounding area. Sited at the western boundary of development, the project lives on the fringes of a meadow near an aspen and conifer forest that cascades down from the summit of Rendezvous Peak. Slightly elevated above neighbors, the compound imparts a feeling of privacy, screens nearby buildings through structural orientation and strategic window placement, and takes in broad views across the valley to the Gros Ventre Range.
