Garden House / Placement

The brief was to create a home for the family that nestled in the landscape. Their previous home designed by Ian Perkins was located in a large property that provided a lot of privacy and calm, and this relocation to a smaller suburban coastal block meant a readjustment to closer quarters. Being fond of the coastal life, they wanted to maintain that feeling of lightness and stillness in their new environment – a place where they could grow old in, closer to friends and family.

Hadong Plaza which once was full of people in the 1970s lost its energy. Instead, the abandoned plaza became a parking lot as the number of cars increased. ‘1970 cultural center’ was built next to the plaza to memorize the old days, but it was not enough to revitalize the plaza again. For this small town, a place for gathering, resting, and playing is required so that various activities and events could occur by local people and tourists. Therefore, the plaza had to be transformed into “a plaza”.

Fulham Cemetery Lodge was built in 1865 as part of an urban composition alongside the cemetery chapel and gatehouse. Over the years the lodge and an adjacent accretion of sheds and public toilets had fallen into disrepair. The original urban composition has been repaired and enhanced, developing an architectural language that allows old and new to give meaning to each other. The retained lodge, now dramatically refurbished and extended, juxtaposes a house for the living beside a home for the dead.

The trunk of a large lime tree, the top of yew, and a few other coniferous trees appear in the early morning to form the soft forest silhouette of the inhabited landscape. We see the birds beginning their work of recovering branches to make their nests, while squirrels are jumping between trees. A few bees swirl over flowers that are beginning to bloom on the tallest flowering subjects. The hedgehog is still hidden in its shelter for the winter. Biodiversity is important. We are at the dawn of spring, at the beginning of March.

Ebury Edge comprises temporary affordable workspaces, a café, and a community center to provide a continuous place for residents old and new to meet as the Ebury Bridge Estate is re-developed phase by phase. The Ebury Bridge Estate had been identified by Westminster City Council as urgently requiring improvement to homes and the external environment. Working closely with a representative steering group, the City Council first established a right of return for all residents before developing proposals for the redevelopment of the estate. Unusually, Westminster is committed to the delivery of new community facilities in advance of the principal scheme.

De Matos Ryan has transformed The Alice Hawthorn’s sustainability with the addition of twelve guest bedrooms and the renovation of its Grade II listed pub. At the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Nidd, the village of Nun Monkton was historically an important Northern trade hub for the medieval river transport network, with many travelers stopping overnight. The increase in road travel saw fewer travelers passing through, which eventually led to its demise as trade and social point.

Ngātuku. Tahoraiti. Waingaro. Takutai. Ahi (The ridges of a hill. A forest clearing. A lost stream. The sea coast. Fire) Colonisation saw the burning and clearing of the native forest in the bay during the late 19th century. A Villa was constructed on the site in 1905 and a boathouse constructed in the 1970s blocked the mouth of the stream. A queen palm stood at the rear of the Villa as the shore was dominated by giant macrocarpa that darkened the valley.

The Institute of Marine Sciences is dedicated to research in oceanology. This small campus welcomes researchers to study the preservation of the sea. Two themes were at the heart of our reflection: hospitality and context; specifically the Mediterranean environment. Situated on the coast, the project houses a program of accommodation and workspaces.
